How to time Stockholm's Vasa Museum in October 2026
Stockholm, Schweden

The warship inside the hall is 69 metres of blackened 17th-century oak, and it fills the room from floor to ceiling. An adult ticket is 195 SEK from 1 October to 31 December 2026, and under-18s go free. The museum takes card payment only.

What you see inside the hall

Three stub masts stand on the roof outside the Vasa Museum (Vasamuseet) (Djurgården), which is how you pick the building out from the quay. The hall inside is dim copper and timber, and the ship holds the middle of it. The carved stern gallery is lit warm against dark walls.

Viewing balconies run around the hull on six levels. Each one brings you alongside a different part of the ship, and you work up through them: the hull from below, then the deck line, then the stern carving from above.

The admission price includes a 25-minute tour of the ship. Parties of more than 10 cannot join that open tour and must book a private guided tour in advance.

When to go in October 2026

Pre-bought tickets give no queue priority, by the museum's own account. Time of day is what you can control, and the hall thins out mid-morning.

Leave the opening-hour crush alone. Walk five minutes along the quay to Vrak first, give it an hour, then come back to the ship. The Vasa hall shuts at 17:00, so an afternoon start has to be an early one.

Mondays reorder the island. Liljevalchs konsthall is free to everyone that day, while Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde and Thielska Galleriet are closed and Junibacken closes on some October Mondays. Check the Junibacken and Gröna Lund calendars before you plan a Monday or a weekday around either.

Tickets, bags and the door

An adult pays 195 SEK between 1 October and 31 December 2026. The summer price is 240 SEK. A combined ticket with Vrak is 315 SEK and stays valid for 72 hours, so you can take the two museums on separate days.

Card payment only. The museum has no cloakroom and no luggage storage, and wheeled or large bags are refused at the door. Arrive with a coat and nothing more.

Arriving by the Djurgården ferry

Djurgårdsfärjan (SL ferry line 82), Stockholm
Djurgårdsfärjan (SL ferry line 82), Stockholm

Djurgårdsfärjan (SL ferry line 82) (Allmänna Gränd) runs year-round from Slussen via Skeppsholmen to Allmänna Gränd, every 10 to 15 minutes from 06:30 to midnight. A single adult fare is 43 SEK and a reduced fare is 26 SEK. The crossing is free on any SL 24-hour or 72-hour travelcard.

The boat is a squat white-and-blue commuter ferry with an open stern deck. From the stern you watch Gröna Lund's coaster track and the museum's masts come up on the approach. Nothing is bookable; you walk on.

Guided harbour boat trips run seven days a week and the season closes on 7 November 2026. Departures are already sold out on 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26 October 2026, and on five further dates. Fix a date before you travel.

Is it worth it

It suits a visitor with half a day on Djurgården who wants to stand under one object and read it from six heights. The hall is dark and busy at opening, and you cannot put a bag down anywhere in the building.

Two museums on the same quay

Vrak – Museum of Wrecks, Stockholm
Vrak – Museum of Wrecks, Stockholm

Vrak – Museum of Wrecks (Djurgårdsstrand 17) sits five minutes' walk away, with glass frontage facing the water. The halls are near black, with floor-to-ceiling projections of Baltic seabed wrecks and dive-simulator screens glowing blue in the dark. An adult ticket is 185 SEK and ages 0 to 18 go free. The museum handles guided visits and school bookings itself.

Nordiska museet (Nordic Museum) (Djurgården) is two minutes from the Vasa doors, a Danish-Renaissance brick-and-sandstone palace with a spired roofline. Inside, a cathedral-scale great hall runs under a glass roof to the colossal painted oak statue of Gustav Vasa, seated at the far end. Entry is 170 SEK for an adult, 150 SEK for a senior or student and 75 SEK for ages 3 to 18.

The building stays open until 20:00 on Wednesdays from September to May. Its indoor footprint is large enough to absorb coach parties, so it is the room to walk into when October rain comes across the harbour.

ABBA, Junibacken, Skansen and Gröna Lund

ABBA The Museum (Djurgårdsvägen) is the one attraction here that needs a slot. Entry is timed with a 30-minute window, so lock it before you commit to a Vasa arrival time. Adult tickets run 269 to 349 SEK by date, ages 7 to 15 pay 129 to 169 SEK, and ages 0 to 6 go free.

Interiors are hot pink and chrome. The sequinned 1970s stage costumes stand in glass cases, there is a replica Polar Studio control desk, and a hologram stage puts you on it as the fifth member. You can book guided tours and full-venue hire through the Groups and Special Tickets desk.

Junibacken (Djurgården) is two minutes from the Vasa entrance, and it is where to go if under-eights lose patience with a dark ship hall. Suspended Story Train cars glide above hand-built miniature Astrid Lindgren landscapes in theatrical half-light, and a full-size Villa Villekulla in primary colours can be climbed. Tickets start at 140 SEK and are cheapest online, each carrying a 30-minute entry slot.

Skansen (Djurgården) is a half-day and should be treated as one. October hours are short: 10:00 to 15:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 16:00 at weekends from 29 September. Halloween programming runs on 24 October and from 28 to 31 October.

An adult pays 200 to 220 SEK online in the September to October shoulder season and more at the gate; ages 0 to 15 are free with a pre-booked ticket. The site is a hilltop village of relocated timber farmsteads with a red-ochre bell tower, wooden boardwalks under yellowing birches and Nordic animals in rocky enclosures. A funicular climbs the slope to the Bredablick lookout tower.

Gröna Lund (waterfront by the quay) closed its summer season on 11 September. In October it opens only on Halloween-season dates and is dark on most weekdays, so check the calendar before you walk over; the final 2026 weekend is 7 and 8 November. Entry plus a ride wristband runs 150 to 450 SEK depending on the date. In late October there are pumpkins, fog and red lighting through the alleys of a funfair wedged against the quay, its steel coaster track looping out over the harbour.

Three art halls on Djurgården

Liljevalchs konsthall (Djurgårdsvägen 60) is a 1916 white neoclassical hall with a colonnaded front, joined to the pale modern Liljevalchs+ extension. The galleries are top-lit and white, and Ylva Snöfrid's 'Musernas hus' is showing. Free 20-minute introductions run Tuesday to Sunday at 12:00 and 15:00.

Admission is 165 SEK for an adult and 135 SEK for a student or senior, under-18s free, and free for everyone on Mondays. Tuesdays and Thursdays run late to 20:00.

Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde (Djurgården headland) is a white early-1900s princely manor on a headland, with a flagpole, a lawn sloping down to the Baltic channel and an old stone windmill on the rise. Ship traffic passes in front of the terrace. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 17:00, Thursdays to 20:00, and closes Mondays. An adult pays 170 SEK and a senior or student 150 SEK, with under-19s free. It is far quieter than anything near the Vasa quay.

Thielska Galleriet (The Thiel Gallery) (Blockhusudden) stands at the far eastern tip of the island, a bus ride from the Vasa: a mustard-yellow Ferdinand Boberg villa with a domed sculpture hall, Munch and Zorn canvases on deep-coloured walls and open water beyond the windows. Hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 12:00 to 17:00. An adult pays 160 SEK, a student or senior 140 SEK, and under-19s go free.

Eating around the quay

Slipen (Beckholmsvägen 26) opens 07:30 to 19:00 daily, which covers breakfast before the museum opens. The room is a converted shipyard slipway hall with tall industrial windows onto the water, a bakery counter stacked with loaves and pastries, and the Beckholmen dry docks and wooden boats outside. You cannot reserve a table there at all.

Blå Porten (Djurgårdsvägen 64) runs 11:00 to 20:00 daily in an enclosed Italianate courtyard: cobbles, a stone fountain, greenery climbing ochre walls, wrought-iron furniture under heat lamps, glazed indoor rooms behind. The courtyard is the one outdoor seat worth taking in October. Parties of five or more book by email; smaller groups walk in.

Rosendals Trädgård (Djurgården) is a working biodynamic market garden with long glasshouses, scrubbed wooden trestle tables among potted plants, cut flowers and sourdough loaves on the counter and a gnarled apple orchard outside. The café opens daily 11:00 to 16:00 with lunch served to 14:30. It is a 15 to 20 minute walk from the Vasa and shuts long before the museum does, so take it as a morning stop. It takes no bookings.

Wärdshuset Ulla Winbladh (Rosendalsvägen 8) is an ochre-yellow 1897 timber inn with white window frames and a gravel garden terrace, dark-panelled dining rooms, copper pans and starched linen. It serves husmanskost, meatballs and Baltic herring, from 11:30 daily and 12:30 at weekends, to 22:00 or 23:00. Reserve ahead at weekends.

Spritmuseum (Djurgårdsvägen 38) occupies a pair of 18th-century naval dockyard warehouses with rough plastered walls and low beams, Warhol's Absolut canvases from the art collection, and a wooden waterfront deck looking back at the city skyline. It opens 11:00 to 22:00 every day, the only museum here still working after the Vasa hall closes, and its restaurant serves dinner three minutes' walk from the ship. Entry is 190 SEK for an adult, 140 SEK for a senior or student and 95 SEK for ages 15 to 18, free under 15. You can book tastings, guided visits and group dining, and the restaurant seats walk-ins.

Practical notes

Mondays close Waldemarsudde and Thielska and can close Junibacken, Gröna Lund opens only on Halloween-season dates, and Skansen's October day ends at 15:00 on weekdays. Book the ABBA timed slot and, for a party of more than 10, the Vasa private tour; bring a card, since the ship museum takes nothing else and will not hold your luggage.

Vor der Reise

How much is a Vasa Museum ticket in October 2026?

An adult pays 195 SEK between 1 October and 31 December 2026, and under-18s go free. A combined ticket with Vrak is 315 SEK and stays valid for 72 hours, so you can use the two museums on separate days.

Does buying a ticket in advance let me skip the queue?

No. The museum says pre-bought tickets give no queue priority, so the only thing you control is when you arrive. The hall thins out mid-morning: spend the first hour at Vrak, five minutes along the quay, then come back.

Can I leave a suitcase or a large bag there?

No. The museum has no cloakroom or luggage storage, and it turns away wheeled or large bags at the door. Plan to carry only a coat.

Is a guided tour of the ship included, and what about groups?

Admission includes a 25-minute tour of the ship. Parties of more than 10 cannot join that open tour and have to book a private guided tour in advance.

What is the easiest way to reach the museum?

Djurgårdsfärjan, SL ferry line 82, runs year-round from Slussen via Skeppsholmen to Allmänna Gränd every 10 to 15 minutes from 06:30 to midnight. A single adult fare is 43 SEK, reduced is 26 SEK, and it is free on any SL 24-hour or 72-hour travelcard.
